INTRODUCTION
Throughout the ages art has played a crucial role in life. Art is universal and because art is everywhere, we experience it on a daily basis. From the houses we live in (architecture) to the movies we see (theatre) to the books that we read (literature). Even in ancient culture art has played a crucial role. In prehistoric times cave dwellers drew on the wall of caves to record history. In biblical times paintings recorded the life and death of Christ. Throughout time art has recorded history. Most art is created for a specific reason or purpose, it has a way of expressing ideas and beliefs, and it can record the experiences of all people.
The Theme of the Course paper is called “Art as a means of  the reflection of the world and its influence on a personality”
The object of the study is the novel by William Somerset Maugham “The Moon and Sixpence”, based on the life of the painter Paul Gauguin. The story is told in the episodic form by the first-person narrator as a series of glimpses into the mind and soul of the central character, Charles Strickland, a middle aged English stock broker who abandons his wife and children abruptly in order to pursue his desire to become an artist.
The aim of the study is the research of the events and situations in the given novel, which show how art can influence the world and a personality.
The study consists of an introduction, four sections, general conclusions, and bibliography.
The theoretical importance of the study is in the generalization of the theoretical aspects of the cognitive linguistics.
The practical value lies in the research of the representation of art as a means of  the reflection of the world and its influence on a personality.
The four sections of study consist of:
1. The general information about the author, his life and career.
2. The main points about the cognitive linguistics – its history and major hypotheses.
3. The information about the novel- historical background and the plot.
4. The research considering the theme of the course work, that is art as a means of  the reflection of the world and its influence on a personality.
